Research is consistently giving us insights into the realities of today’s workplace. Below are some shocking statistics about today’s organizations.

  1. A study by CareerBuilder.com shows 58% of managers said they did not receive any management training. This statistic is a reality check to companies they need to invest in their company leadership.
  2. A book by Leigh Branham, The 7 Hidden Reason Employees Leave revealed that 89% bosses believed employees quit because they wanted more money. The true statistic is only 12% of employees leave for money. This is another reason companies need to invest in their leaders to help them retain employees.
  3. A Harvard Business review survey revealed 58% of employees say they trust strangers more than their own boss. Again another statistic that employers should be concerned about when it comes to leading employee productivity efforts in an organization.
  4. Global studies revealed 79% of employees quit their jobs because of “lack of appreciation”. Organizations need to develop their managers in order to teach them how to recognize and appreciate their employees.
  5. American workers forfeited 50% of their paid vacation in 2017. Nearly 10% of employees do not take a vacation at all. This statistic leaves companies open to employee stress, depression, and potential accidents.
  6. A Career Builder study revealed 40% employees stated they have gained weight. Only 63% of those employees did not take advantage of the employer-sponsored wellness benefits. This statistic should alarm organizations who spend thousands of dollars to create healthy work environments.
  7. Employees still fall in love at the workplace. A Glassdoor study found 52% employees reported finding love at work.  Managers need to be trained on how to address this complex issue at their companies.
  8. The Conference Board study reported 53% of Americans are currently unhappy at work. Again this statistic should be alarming to companies who want employee productivity and organizational commitment.
  9. Global studies found that employees want recognition from their manager. Employees stated that not even high pay, promotion or training would be more important than manager recognition.

The lesson to organizations about these statistics is the manager is a critical component of employee retention, engagement, and productivity.  Manager training in employee recognition, dealing with conflict and how to enhance productivity will be the only way for organizations to see the productivity results they desire.
